Grades
nine through twelve at Gables are similar to those in a traditional
high school setting. Students change classes, study a college prep
or vocational school curriculum, participate in traditional high
school activities (dances, fundraisers, yearbook, sports, arts,
television, etc.). Every effort is made to guide seniors and postgraduates
to actively explore opportunities in regular college classes or
vocational-technical coursework on a joint enrollment basis. The
joint effort with local colleges and technical schools provides
counseling, course selection, career and goal orientation, and academic
support to specific academic needs.
High
School students at Gables are led, as appropriate, through PSAT
and SAT, as well as guidance in choosing a college suitable to the
student. In 1999, eighty percent of the graduates pursued college
educations; one hundred percent of the graduating class of 2001
are now attending institutions of higher learning. If students do
not choose to pursue the college prep curriculum, every advantage
is given them through vocational counseling by the Gables staff,
and by representatives from State of Georgia and other human service
agencies.
Higher
academic level classes emphasize not only the basic skills needs
of verbal and written communication and mathematics, but also those
skills necessary for the students to become completely functional
adults. Certain skill areas such as learning strategies, citizenship,
vocational surveys, problem solving, and interpersonal relationships
serve to round out a young man or woman and prepare them for life
beyond high school.
